Every Thursday here at stay tuned for another exciting chapter in Tom Locke’s story. Its not dystopian but, have mercy, its one man’s survival

  • If life were a gamble…….

Not sure how many dark mountain roads you have traveled but its not the most likely place you are going to run into traffic. Still, this was a huge development for the two of them. It put them one step closer to civilization. One step closer to warning the country about what was coming. The dark streets of America flooded with these relics in headscarves as they slid into one house after the other unleashing untold terror

Nothing was cut and dry though. Were they supposed to believe that anyone in the adjacent town was naïve enough not to know what was happening on the top of this “hill” they just came down from. Was the whole town bought and sold by radical Islam. If Tom and Najair jumped into a truck with some bearded mountain man would he simply drive him back up to Mosul Mountain and back to their doom. It was a risk they weren’t yet ready to take. So they hugged the wood line.

“They will drive this road in search for us Tom.”

“I am sure Najair but we will make much better time moving on pavement.”

“Yes but what waits for us at the end of this pavement.”

“I think we have to take a chance here. Besides, what’s one more? I am not going back there. Lets not forget about these,” Tom winked at Najair and raised his handgun, “I think we are in a great place to negotiate. Don’t you?”

They walked in silence for a while both scouring the woods and road ahead of them for lights. Without a decision made it would be tough to act when that car did finally come rolling by. There was more riding on this thing then just their lives.

“We have to id the driver through headlights before they pass us. How do you figure we do that?”

“Not the slightest clue Najair. Not even the slightest. Im pretty positive though when my train back to reality comes buzzing by it will hit me like a ton of bricks.”

“And if you are wrong we both die……and many more.

“Praise Allah,” Tom said with the utmost sarcasm.

“I might consider shooting you if I wasn’t so tired Tom. You are a portrait of the arrogant and small minded American.”

“Lets not fight Najair we could be dead in minut………”

Like some ethereal glow deep within the trees man-made light reflected off the forest. Shortly after their first glimpse came the cool hum of a vehicle engine. The roads were curvy and they could see the light change its path left than right and back again. It was climbing the mountain and heading towards them.

“What if we don’t see another ride for the rest of the night.”

“What if this becomes our last ride?”

The lights blanketed the road before them as the car came up on its last turn before staring them in the face. They lit up the forest around them just long enough for Tom to see his opportunity. An old dead tree was just a few feet off the road. It was riddled with holes and had only a few branches jutting out of it.

”Shut up and help me Najair!”

Tom ran into the woods and up to the tree. He began to push with all his might as the vehicle rounded the corner. Najair jumped in beside him applying force as well until a couple cracks echoed throughout the night air.

The vehicle was moving slow and the dead tree landed just a few yards in front of it. The tires squealed to a quick stop as the two of them ducked behind some cover.
